Introducing "SharedHarvest.net" Food Exchange
iWasteNot Systems is proud to introduce the SharedHarvest Food Exchange, a new online resource for communities to address issues related to food production, distribution and waste.
This new type of exchange works like an online farmers' market and food bank rolled into one. By supplying a single donation point for what would otherwise be wasted food and a marketplace to allow local producers to easily reach local consumers, the site can help to:
- Reduce food waste
- Benefit those in need
- Catalyze a market for locally-produced food
Our FIRST SharedHarvest.net Food Exchanges are now going live in Maryland and Okanogan County, Washington.

Recycling interest surges

Public demand for information on how to recycle is surging, according to the Recycling Council of B.C.
The council says it's recycling hotline (604-RECYCLE) is logging about 60 per cent more calls so far in 2008.
Calls from Metro Vancouver residents leapt from 4,400 to 7,000 in April alone.
"The numbers are way up in Metro Vancouver," said executive director Brock MacDonald. "People are really keen to know what they can do."
Three quarters of all calls come from Metro Vancouver.
Interest is partly attributed to Metro Vancouver's January move to ban more materials from landfills and its Zero Waste Challenge initiative.
The Recycling Council web site, at www.rcbc.bc.ca, is B.C.'s main clearinghouse for information on what can be recycled and where to take it.
MacDonald also said www.surrey.reuses.com has so far proven the most successful of a series of partner sites dedicated to helping people give away or sell unwanted items.

Stewart says that, “Ten months into the okanagan.reuses.com website, and already there has been over ten thousand kg of stuff traded, given away, or sold for next to nothing. That’s a huge amount of material that’s found a useful life elsewhere and been diverted from our landfills.”
In order to use okanagan.reuses.com you must first become a member, but membership is free, and simply ensures the listing service isn’t misused. If you are looking for a specific item, you can simply post your request on the site, and you’ll be matched up with anyone wanting to get rid of the same item. If you have items to give away or sell for less than $100, these items can also be posted on the website for free.
